Attic Rooms

Attic rooms can complete the house, making it more spacious and beautiful as well. Though, before you get to enjoy the added space, it is important for you to follow a few guidelines to ensure the proper planning of your new space. This will also involve evaluating your present attic to determine whether you can do it yourself or need professional help to add your rooms.

First determine what you want to do with your extra space. Determine if you would like to have a guest room or two, extra bedrooms for an expanding family, or family rooms up in the attic. Also determine how you might imagine the space. If you always dreamed of a window seat, you may be able to make that a reality in your new attic rooms.

Stepping It up

The other factor to attend to is that you may also want a bathroom up in the attic as well. This may involve a good deal of work. Additionally, you will also have to spend some funds to open up the space to include stairs of some sort. It is rather likely that no one will want to use a ladder or trap door to make their way up and down into attic rooms on a daily basis.

The establishment of stairs means that you will have to find space in the house to come down from the attic rooms but it may also mean you are in need of further attic cellulose insulation. This is not always easy though because the predecessor, such as the ladder, may exist in the middle of a heavily traveled and narrow hallway. This translates into needing to find a different place for the access to your attic rooms.

Evaluate the Present

Beyond stairs, you will also have to look at what kind of area you have up in the attic, before you begin planning your rooms. You may or may not have a real floor throughout the attic. You may or may not also have any insulation. If there is an exhaust fan, it may be too loud and disruptive for members of the family who may want to live in those attic rooms. It may be a bit drafty up in that region of the home with little more than the roofing and some wood protecting you from the elements.

This can create a great deal of uncomfortable spikes and dips in temperature. Likewise, without proper ventilation and air circulation this can also cause greater stress on the existing heating and cooling systems that are already present in your home. Thus, adding attic rooms will involve a great many possibilities, and perhaps even fixes before you get to realize the additional space.

If you have no insulation, you will want to add some because the heat that used to get trapped inside will now be circulating throughout the rest of the rooms of your house. An exhaust fan is usually either built into the sides, between the gables, or installed directly on the roof top. They used to be run on electricity, for the most part.

Fans and Insulation

Now there are solar options, which go on the roof top, and allow the home owner and other residents a more comfortable existence. This is without incurring a lifetime of electricity charges to run the fan. It is also generally much quieter than previous renditions of exhaust fans. It will also save you on electricity to cool and heat the rest of your rooms in the house. This is because it will reduce the stress on the system.

If there is already insulation and a working exhaust fan, then you will have to look around to see if there is a floor in tact. In many homes, the attic is treated like a land that is never to be visited again. This often translates in having a main and narrow island of planks that cross from one end to the other.

Standing on Solid Ground

Flooring needs to be added in this case. Sometimes it is best to not have flooring in place yet because it allows you to add new and updated insulation to the space first. Plus, it is an opportunity for you and your family to determine what kind of floor will best suit your family and their needs.

When you have established the basics, you will be able to focus on the potential for the rooms that you will be putting into place. This can entail planning around your present and potential future needs. Consider all of your options and plan for them with your attic rooms.
